As of July 1, 2006, WA State gas tax will be the highest in the US....

Gasoline and Cigarette Taxes Third Highest Nationally Washington levies a 6.5% general sales or use tax on consumers, which is well above the national median of 5%.

The state collects approximately $1,358 per capita in sales taxes, which is 2nd highest in the nation.

Washington’s gasoline tax stands at 31 cents per gallon, which ranks 3rd highest nationally. The gasoline tax is scheduled to increase to 34 cents per gallon on July 1, 2006. This scheduled increase would make Washington's gas tax the highest in the nation.

Washington's cigarette tax stands at $2.025 per pack of twenty and ranks 3rd highest nationally. The sales tax was adopted in 1933, the gasoline tax in 1921 and the cigarette tax in 1935.
