I have experienced the same behaviour in person when interacting with certain Americans, and experienced it on the bulletin boards.

The state of public discourse in the United States is at an all-time low in the 30 or so years I’ve been following it, and I place much of the blame on the right wing bully pulpit that currently dominates American media.

(I always laugh when these ideologues claim that the American media are dominated by liberals. Try looking outside the US, guys, and you will see how untrue this is.)

From what I’ve seen, virtually every one of the Fox News types relies on shouting down and name-calling rather than actual interaction, an approach that is fortunately largely absent from the more civil public sphere in Canada. This leaves no space in public discourse for constructive engagement between various positions, so only the loudest of the bullies get heard. (I point to the unwatchable Cramer for an example of the same type of discourse in another public sphere.)

Add in the dominance of evangelical Christianity with its “I am right and you are wrong, because God says so” approach, and the understandable cynicism felt by the non-ideologues in the current climate as they view the unsavoury mess around them, and you’ve got the current disaster.

A healthy public sphere of discourse is a necessity for a vital democracy. I hope the Americans can find a way to resurrect one before it's too late.
