The U.S. death toll in Iraq is higher than the death toll was in Vietnam in it's third year.

A meaningless point. Vietnam was a case of slow escalation from a few advisers to a large army. We aren't at the equivalent to the third year in Vietnam, we are rather into the equivalent of the period of "Vietnamization". The enemy forces we face aren't close to having the capability of the NVA. They have no ability to even attempt something like Tet, or Khe Sahn or the Eastertide Offensive.
