some info on the amd geode OLPC initiative, and some info on intel's counter at the bottom (I realize this post probably belongs on the AMD thread but there are a whole bunch of them and mostly they talk about politics now)... so fyi
-----------------------
more on AMD, some really tremendous stats were released on AMD today. Honestly I am not sure if this is just GOOGLE, or RACK, or what.

AMD grew its share of the server market by 26 percent compared with its fourth-quarter server market share of 16.4 percent, and by more than 250 percent compared with the previous year's first quarter, it said. Mercury Research principal analyst Dean McCarron confirmed the figures were accurate. Opteron has enjoyed a performance advantage over Intel's Xeon processors in the last year, opening doors for AMD at some of the largest IT organizations in the world.

also the Geode which is the cheap AMD chip in the OCPL initiative which will certainly be touted by Google and is targeted for christmas 2006. I don't think the AMD people really know much about this Geode, and since OLPC is a non profit exercise maybe this is not big for the bottom line, but it could be huge for mindshare.

Hardware details for OLPC, April 22, 2006

Intel will have new chips later in the year. Buyers who want those new chips will wait till then. Also business's may want the lower power consumption of the AMD chips and may not be able to wait. From what I've read the new Intel chips will consume less power than the other companies chips. FWIW
