... nope, not as bad as all that, certainly in most of china, but abject never the less, and so, best to urbanize in any case, as opposed to staying on the farm, for many if not most.

though i recently did go 3 hours outside of guilin on a recent trip, by river boat, and i would describe the environment as tranquil, scenary picture perfect, and lifestyle delightful if not exactly convenient

also had a sunday day trip to the country side of hong kong, to view a friend's fixed-up village house, complete with broadband, satellite, hardwood floor, german kitchen, thai beddings, swedish suv, and a few neighborhood water buffalos - ideal.

so, i suspect when unclebigs spoke about the greatness of the farm, he probably had the nicer imaginings in mind, as opposed to a place without access to running water and flowing electricity.
