Dear Eracer:

Quit being silly. I am responding that many of the so called "benchmarks" use working sets smaller than 4MB. They do not show what happens when real loads are run on such systems. Many of the office applications touted by these benchmarks run fine in just 256KB of effective L2 cache. So a Sempron X2 (2x128KB) would run as fast as Conroe for those simple loads. But so would a SC Sempron 128KB L2 since you think that systems are mostly idle with those workloads. And it will be far less expensive. And is available today.

As to your silly suggestion, lets see how Conroe does wrt A64 X2 with both using no L2 in keeping with comparing apples to apples. I suspect it will be quite the disaster for Conroe. Of course you realize that all K8s have 128KB of L1 per core, much more than Conroe/Woodcrest/Merom. And they do use exclusive L2 which makes their L1s more effective.
