The United States decides to intervene. Given that this is roughly what happened in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in China -- during which time there was a major American presence in Shanghai -- it is not as far-fetched as it might seem.

Fantasyland is fun, and my wife is morgan fairchild! Yah thats the ticket. Back in the 19th the UK was propping up opium dealers and 1/3rd of chinese were getting happy on the drugs. I just post a link that arizona youth are getting hooked on meth at 9 years old - most of it coming from south of the border but originating in Asia - the tables have turned!

Russ never did tell me what he thought of the drug situation in china and I never hear Chen or anyone else talk about it much - but the official figures I read is that the USA gets 90% of the worlds illegal drugs and US army generals are saying its the drug dealers in afghanistan causing all the REAL problems hiding behind a cloak of religious holy wars.

Under these circumstances, the government in Beijing would be forced to resist or abdicate. So, if the primary interest of China is the maintenance of internal security, a secondary interest would be deterring foreign interventions in the event of instability.

Who has more power - the mega corp multi nationals who want good business and profit or nationalists who want unity or the drug dealers - I think the nationalists will lose out. I can't see Realmulan throwing away her designer bag and new dress putting back on a bland jumpsuit to be "one of the borg" - can you? She is different from all the rest eh?

If we accept the premises that China's major resources will go to the army for security purposes,

In Rome this was the case - all the resources going into maximizing the military. China is not Italy.
