What is the harm in having a notation on the Profile page that says this ID began on such and such a date and previous IDs were such and such.

In 2-3 years we could have posters with 4 different IDs on SI, all quite legit. If you don't know where someone posts regularly, and you don't notice the old ID is missing on the thread, it's not easy at all.

Suppose I put someone on Ignore a long time ago and now they have a new ID. That ID is on my Ignore list. So now if I have to go review their current posts to figure out who they might have been and why I ignored them? Ditto for bans.

I can associate a specific ID with a specific event. Matching that event to a daisy chain of annual IDs, forget it.

JMHO.
