Dear Eracer:

You evidently forget that HT 3.0 is fully backwards compatible and all HT versions are auto configured. AMD could implement HT 3.0 on all CPUs for all sockets and no one will notice when the CPUs are on MBs with HT 1.0 and 2.0. Only when used with a MB with HT 3.0 and it is activated by the chipset/BIOS/OS will it be evident.

Just like you likely forgot that all DDR2 DRAM controllers are required to function with DDR1, even ODMC ones, by JEDEC. Grandfathering older versions is a strong factor for customers. You only have to look at x86 and AMD64 for great examples.

Pete

as Pete said, there is a good chance for backward compatibility. Even if there would not be it might make sense for AMD to take a hit in order preserve market share. Performance, as both Intel and AMD proved it so well recently, is very often secondary to the news of the new technology.
