<<And 347 an acre to grow corn seems about double what my memory tells me.>>

It's a lot higher now than it used to be but the yields are about double. To get up to 347 it takes a lot of add ons. Cost of the tractor, interest on the money that was used to buy the land, insurance, cost of storage bins ...

Data are from a study/research paper by a Cornell professor of ecology and agriculture. For what it's worth, the papers that Pimentel has (co-)authored are generally published in peer-reviewed publications, but note that they've generated a lot of controversy. Here's one press release referencing his work.

The numbers came from the post that Tim posted. But then, as kumar reminded us, gas in his area in CA in 1996 (10 years ago) was $0.96 per gallon....

I just got gas and it was $3.05/gal for regular....including $0.31 cents, soon to be 35 cents WA State tax, and the $0.184 cents for Fed Tax....

Gas was cheaper last year too....before China and India wanted lots of it, before Venezuela's president had gone totally off the deep end, ditto Iran's president, etc.....
