To me road-use taxes are a given. Fuel taxes will be replaced with some other tax, such as a use tax, and that's fine with me, nothing wrong with paying for the roads one uses.

I believe Peak Oil is coming, sooner rather than later. When Peak Oil arrives, gasoline will become a luxury. At some point society will decide it's time to move on to a new propulsion technology. In my estimation for costs and versitility, electric seems to be the most likely replacement, and we'll probably be incrementally moving in that direction anyway as plug-in hybrids develop.

It seems like you have a grasp regarding this. Funny how dismissive people are of new technology. I remember a number of technologies that were around when I was growing up that no longer exist, at least not in wide spread us, like record players. Cars will eventually make a transformation as well.
