My guess why they aren't still there nationwide is that the stations would have to employ them, pay SS and insurance, and carry liability to cover any accidents or injuries. So the cost to the big oil companies suddenly becomes very high for offering a simple service.

They know that if they don't offer the classic friendly attendant wearing the Texaco star, we'll still come fill up, swipe our card and maybe go inside to buy some junk food and use the ATM while we are there. They are 7-11's with gas pumps in effect now.

It's a case where good service is not necessarily good business, sadly.
