For example, if Westergaard starts posting again, I think we should know it is Westergaard because he has become a public figure.

I, for one, would be most surprised if this event ever comes to fruition. John Westergaard passed away circa 2003 (or thereabouts). RIP...

Just look out for common grammar and spelling errors, writing styles, tempers, and that will give most people away.

That must be about some panacea because it certainly isn't about the internet as it exists in this world.

Users have always been able to change their aliases here; now they can do it themselves once every twelve months, whereas before they had to ask and admin to make the change but could so whenever they wanted to.

Nobody has a "right" to know who anyone else is unless the other person chooses to tell them. We do require users to retain their posting history which is far more than most other message boards do, and way more relevant than their alias in my opinion. We've also done a great deal to enhance the feature set available to research user posting history on SI; it is far more functional that it ever was previously.
