You need a minimum of 7 HT links for a 3d mesh (actually 6 for the mesh + 1 for the IO).

You could get by with 6, if you sprinkle HTT IO tunnels into the mesh as separate non-compute nodes (which may be better than connecting IO to the processors directly anyways, being a more modular architecture.)

And the link-splitting/unganging feature of HTT3.0 would get you 6x8GB/s links...

Perfect for that 3d folded torus topology you're thinking about.
