Crude oil inventories are at record highs, and the recent gas problems had to do with politically-mandated mixture changes at the refineries. The world is willing to pump flat-out at $70+ prices. I don't see where the shortages come from until demand is sitting over 90 million bbl a day and we reach a point where new supply just can't keep up.

Getting there will be a gradual process. In 1973, the Arabs just shut off the spigot. Who would do that now and why? I think it's doubtful that Iran or Venezuela would do it all, certainly not for long if they were just trying to make a point.
