All excellent points you make. My concerns tend to reflect a relative perspective -- and relative to what I see elsewhere, we are slipping badly on every front concerning our position in the world. Hard work, education and a willingness to invest in the future -- you can't beat that. But what I see in The US is much closer to complacency. We once led the world -- and I mean up until fairly recently. Now I think we are going in the wrong direction, and on the important issues that impact our economic, social and environmental well-being we have decided to withdraw into gated communities and assume that our role in the world is to bomb other countries as a means of "protecting" our interests. We are addicted to cheap oil, cheap money and cheap labor. We are nearing the end of all three, and the choices we make now will set the stage for our children and their children. The bond bubble is a symptom. So is the housing bubble. But the deeper issue is what kind of world we want to live in and what we are prepared to do to make our own future better. The last few years are an alarming indication that we are not up to the challenge.
