<Depression... gold stocks fall.> Was US dollar still on gold standard at that time? You bet. High interest rate at that time made gold stocks less attractive, of course. Now, we have run away paper fiat money printed based on low interest rate, unacceptable national deficits and mountains of debts. We are going to have hyper inflation if Bush keeps on borrowing, printing and fighting wars like having ADD. Whitehouse is a mess. We can add more onto the list. Now, you can see the apples and oranges.
