"Funny, if he only needed one class, you'd think he'd go for it."

He probably tried several times. My wife runs into this every time she teaches the Intro to Logic class. That class is considered an adequate substitute for a math credit in some degree programs. So the math phobes flock to it. Not realizing that the things they have the most problems with in math are also true of that class, in spades. So in the final few weeks, she always has the proto-Deutsch's coming up to her and saying "Look, if I don't pass this class I can't graduate and take that job I already have lined up. What are you going to do about it?". Given that the highest grade they've pulled all semester was likely to be in the range of 20, the set of possible answers all bear a remarkable resemblance to "nothing"...

I was in one of those classes although it was called Advanced Economics, not Logic. I had to take the class for my endorsement. Three weeks into the course, the professor told us they should make trig and calculus prerequisites. UGH! I had to fight to get a B. First time, I had to join a study group. He flunked 60% of the class. It was an ugly thing to watch unfold. <g>
