Looks like NOR flash is poised for an exit, benefiting Spansion (and, indirectly, AMD). From EETimes:

As a holder of some Spansion shares, that would be nice. AMD would also be in a position to realize cash for all those shares at some point. Getting a $1B or so would help the old balance sheet....

Cravey.

But .. but ... NOR had improved profitability for several quarters now!

"“In terms of non-performing businesses, anything with a bracket will be looked at,” he said, referring to the company’s loss-ridden units. Intel's core processor business is making money, but its NOR flash unit could be in big trouble. For several quarters, Intel has been losing money in its NOR flash unit. In Q1, the company lost $108 million in the segment; it is investing more in the NAND sector."

Sounds a bit panicky. I guess he finally had an accountant suggest to him that current asset trends were frightening with cash running down rapidly while inventories keep on rising...not to mention that $3.9B goodwill that is not being amortized at ant reasonable rate ;-)

As well, if Conroe doesn't live up to its hype, and either can't be produced in significant volumes for another year or so or costs a bundle (poor yields) to produce, INTC may well be in for a lengthy skid! (After all, Conroe is a new process, which takes many years to mature!)

Intel should get rid of the "Other" business unit, that thing really stinks.
