the moral of the story is that my helmet had a great big crack in it where I hit something hard.... had that been my skull.....who knows...????

You would have turned out to be a liberal?

I doubt we'd be having this conversation.

Back in the mid-80's, my wife and I were bicycle riding in Maryland tobacco country on the Delmarva Penninsula. She picked up a hanger in the front wheel, went over the handlebars.

Got a separated shoulder and hit her head. Luckily, this was the first time out we were wearing helmets. I hate to think what would have happened to her if she hadn't had the helmet on.

Wearing a helmet definitely makes it safer to ride a bike.

So would adding 2 additional wheels.

Ditto building a steel roll cage around it.

Ditto Ditto adding airbags all around.

Even better, people would be safer if we just outlawed the damn things.

But if it saved even one life, wouldn't it be worth it?

You were lucky. When I was working in a hospital, a teenage boy about 19 came in that had wiped out his motorcycle. It scrambled his brains. The hospital set up something like a big baby pen for him. He couldn't talk and and had to wear diapers. Some things are worse than dying.
