Not that absurd actually. I'll bet it's pretty hard to get oil out of Nigeria right now and they have producing wells. -g-

But politicians restrict production with incompetent state owned oil companies, punitive taxes on production, and setting areas off limits to production. So oil production will peak long before simple geology would indicate because there is no unfettered access to the rocks for those with the best technology.

Looks like Dennis has done a great job at carrying forward my thoughts. Maybe the right answer is a combination of the 2. Geopolitical issues would not have much relevance if the world supply/demand balance for oil wasn't already tight to begin with.
