The clerics were for Rafsanjani, not Ahmadinejad. And you point to the reason's why. The Katami reform movement had collapsed and Rafsanjani was far more conservative than the Katami but and he is far more pragmatic than Ahmadinejad. If you go back to the election, you will see that the mullahs were largely behind him as a heavyweight rather than the current president. It was the people of iran who didnt want any part of the "elitist" rafsanjani and went with Ahmadinejad. And the iran reform movement is nowhere to be found because the iranian reformers lacked courage to challenge the mullahs and risk harm. Its one thing to zip latte and be a student reformer and quite another to put ones life on the line for your beliefs.
