Heard a somewhat similar story about Iraq on the radio yesterday. They were interviewing Iraqi women about gold and apparently it is very much like India in that people typically carry their savings in the form of gold and wear it when they are able. These days, that mostly means inside the house only, if at all. Because of the threat of robbery, many women choose not to wear their gold outside the home. They grow up with a reverence for gold that we in the West are far too sophisticated to have...for now.
