I believe there is no conflict at all between being a Liberal and a capitalist. The multinational corporations that now run the country have warped capitalism well beyond its form since Adam Smith. Corporations didn't even exist until the mid 1800's. For multinationals, money is not just a means to an end, it is the only thing. It's in their DNA. So values aside from making money just arent' relevant. When one considers how our campaign fianance system has evolved, it is no surprise that our politicians are now essentially owned by multinational corporations and their special interest groups. Witness the recent move in congress to give the taxpayers a $100 "rebate" to help with high gasoline prices. That was the most insulting thing to come out of Washington this year!
No doubt the Senators got their walking papers from a PR guy working for the boards at the major oil companies.
They just need to be put back in their place. Not going to be an easy task. May never happen, unfortunately.
