I am not so sure. He did have support from religious and working class folks who dont like mullahs or latte drinking students. It is a very interesting dynamic going on over there. Reformism in iran didnt go much past the students and the successful modern day revolts occur when working class and students are on the same side--eastern europe is and example of that. Iran is more like china but even without a Tianeman attempt to challenge the authorities. Iran is like china--switch reds for clerics and it begins to make sense.
