In that mirage picture -- it is fog/cloud, NOT pollution. That is a spectacular scene, specially famous in that area (by the sea).

In those pollution picture, those could be sulphur, could be other harmful chemicals. And those very polluted places are mostly in small cities. Pollution in big cities are mostly coming from cars, or from coal burning in winter.

And believe it or not, I stayed in NYC for 3 some summer months about 10 years ago. My face/nose all got a lot black dirt after I walked on the street for several hours. Even Beijing was not as bad when I was there in summer 2004. I did NOT felt I had to breathe harder comparing with I was in L.A. or in NYC.
