GM's fuel cell research facility in Honeoye Falls is in my neck of the woods. It is an alternative, but the upfront cost to GM and the consumer is the downfall. I haven't looked in depth into electric car and battery research economics. Electric and Fuel Cell will be much later, IMO. Even the Ethanol infrastructure isn't fully in place yet. More plants being build, more EB 85 pumps needed, storage, ect. ect.. I can't imagine yet, the infrastructure that will be needed for electric and fuel cell. I think the ethanol infrastructure is more economically viable and faster to build. Both at the corporate and consumer level. We have yet to go through the Bio-mass stage yet in ethanol. Europe will be the test. If that's successful. I can see US plants converting. If they are competitive with corn based plants. Once a viable alternative is successful at both levels. IMO, More alternatives can be offered to consumers.
