Opinions.

I think the whole idea of recommended posts is for the birds!!

Lots of adults around here perfectly capable of deciding for themselves what is valuable, and what ain't...without any need for any big brother to tell them...or to listen to "public opinion"..

Some of the compilations you now carry are bad enough already without trying to force anything further down this useless, dubious, questionable,road...

I would vote for rec's in the past "x" days. Among other things, it would allow old posts that have a shelf life to be rediscovered and brought back to everyone's attention.

However, having thought about it some more, I don't think I like the idea of using recs to publish a list of top recommended posts. It's still a useful feature, but just build it in so people can see it. Show us the number of recs when we view a post. Add it to advanced search, maybe even make it a criterion. Let us sort on it when we display results. Etc.

As for featuring posts, I would like to see a different approach. One possibility: As I said, TMF's POD is an editorial decision made by TMF staff, where # rec's is only one data point. It occurs to me that in the SI model, the best way to accomplish this would be to set up a volunteer "editorial board" of community members (who should probably be anonymous) who would cull the posts and pick the ones to be featured. Just a thought...
