He didn't attack Bush, he roasted him. It's an annual event where the president gets roasted by an invited comedian.

And no matter what you think of Bush

I agree it was a very hard attack on Bush and poor taste and painful for me to watch but I suffered through it - I have never seen anything like it by another comedian directly to a presidents face - and Bush had to sit there and take it - no closing his ears going LALALALA on Colbert. No snowjob sugar coating things for the boss. He did sit there and ridicule Jesse Jackson - like boxing a glacier.

It was purely a political moment - no comedy whatsoever. I watch colberts show sometimes - but he is so hardassed in his ridicule it is not enjoyable or humorous sometimes. He gave them a good kick in the nutz though - and wether I thought it was funny or not - maybe that is what those marshmellows in washington need - lots of nut kicking. I don't know how much influence Bush has in the comedian who gets picked - but that was a horrible publicity moment - but Bush has had so many - I guess he is used to it by now :(
