Following too closely is the cause of most traffic accidents... I apply the 2 second rule, although 2 1/2 or 3 is always more comfortable, especially on longer drives...

Houston started using unmarked cars on the freeways and toll roads watching and reporting license plates, make and model of cars tailgating, speeding and making unsafe lane changes. They would radio a marked patrol car farther up who would then pull over the car and write tickets.

I dunno know if it's helped at all or not.
