Incidentally, I read a whole mess o' books on Chinese paper money, and astonishly, up until the Western powers came in, they only used it for about 200 years.

Gold, silver, silk, tea, and bronze. Every paper currency collapsed under the weight of printing of lots of it during wars. The Manchu dynasty never printed any. In fact, any official who suggested creating it had his career advancement stopped right there.

Fascinating place your country. Silver was the preferred currency when the Communists took the country (and the silver) over.
