Because that is where it would go. I can tell you what happens when a population experiences a sudden, huge drop in income. I lived here during the Bust. It isn't pretty. It is a certainty that most of the Western countries would wind up with nasty little dictatorships. With well-equiped armies. A very stable situation. "Plenty of immigrants move to the US and their kids and grandkids grow up to be doctors, lawyers and Indian chiefs" So? Why should those make any more than their global brethren? What about those doctors in Bangladesh. They don't make $160k, far from it. Is that fair? What about those Chinese chemical engineers? Ok, they don't have student loans, but is it fair they only make $1k a month? Or are you going to try to restrict this to unskilled labor? If so, why? Or how?
