This was their stated goal:

"America's major cities will grind to a halt and its economy will stagger..."

How do you aim to stagger an economy without harming businesses?

The fact remains, businesses that rely on illegal immigrant labor were harmed, both by loss of business and in many cases by being explicitly identified over the local airwaves. There's plenty of people out there now saying, "Screw them, I'm not going to do business with so and so." Enforcement actions against companies who employ illegals have stepped up in the past few weeks. A drop in the bucket so far, but a lot of these businesses and companies as of today are out there now with their pants dropped for everyone to see. So they are all potential targets now for 100% legal enforcement.

Shrewd, shrewd strategy.

Virtually everyone in America is a long term immigrant. The vast, vast majority of us ARE legals and are employed as such. So it is not a wholly unreasonable or impractical expectation on our part that documented workers be hired. We know it can be done.

And as much as we might empathize with the plight of disadvantaged human beings degraded by having been born in societies so clearly less successful and adaptable than our own by nearly any measure you can think of, most of us will not respond favorably to those who come in and tell us, after they have washed a few pots and trimmed a few shrubs, that everything we've built in this country we've built on their backs and we owe them. We didn't, and we don't. It's a privilege for them to be here, just like it's a privilege for us, and nothing is owed to them until they've earned it the same way that all the legal immigrants before them earned it.
