I just meant he makes the plague exciting, and turns it in to quite the story. He also deals with the mystery of why the plague travelled so fast in the 14th century, when in later plagues (like the one in china during the Victorian era) it travelled much more slowly.

The book is packed with facts, and really ought to read like a textbook, but it doesn't. That's all I meant.
