Yes, Demand Destruction it is (what a corny name). Something the American business/political right have been working for years to avoid. They have literally engineered this current oil crisis by ending the government's pressure to increase mileage standards (CAFE) right around the time of the Persian Gulf War in 1990. They want to keep the demand for oil high, so price and profits remain high. So, in some respects people can rightly be angry at the oil/auto companies and their rightwing allies in Congress for engineering this crisis. Of course, if they are driving SUVs and wasting gasoline, their anger is misguided.
