Yep. Once I crossed a lake on the winter road in a whiteout. Car bogged down in the drifts just after I hit the ice. Three in the morning and I knew it would be hours before the weather lessened and the plows started to tackle the snow.

There was a Reserve across the lake and I had to decide between trying to walk to it or watching my car run out of gas in about 3 hours. I decided to walk.

With a bottle of scotch for energy and confidence I set out in what I hoped was a somewhat straight direction. After a time I started to consciously try to cover ground with my steps as it was becoming too much of a lifting from snow...and not going forward all that much.

After a time I started to think about digging into one of the drifts and waiting it out. But the thought came that I was giving up--and what if I didn't wake up?

Needless to say, I kept on until I saw the darkness of the trees and I knew I was close to people, safety, and yes...FIRE!

Nature does not much tolerate stupidity such as I showed that night. Even the lowly mosquito used to kill healthy men in the days of long portages. Without fire and water (and shelter) we are frail creatures, indeed...
