War is hell, chapter 7.

Wars are fought for all kinds of reasons; some of those reasons are brutally evil. Fighting a war so that you can pillage, loot, rape and ravage others, etc. is brutally evil. Sacrificing your own comfort to struggle in a war to defend yourself or your group, or to free your fellow human beings from the oppressive conditions of brutality imposed by an evil and tyrannical despot are worthy causes.

Entering such a struggle, however, is an ultimate test of one’s nobility; because, the usual regard for the well being of others and living according to principles of decency remains obligatory. Old sayings like, ‘don’t kick a dog when it is down’ come into play. In other words, when your enemy is subdued, you have no human right to continue your attack, or to abuse, torture, humiliate, or kill your prisoner out of spite.

Anyone failing that test has crossed over and has become the very thing we stand against as a noble nation. Such persons should therefore be routed out, charged, and punished for their conduct.

Sorry, but that is a simple ugly fact that goes along with the ugliness of war. We cannot condone behavior within our ranks that we have gone to war to eliminate.

best regards,
