That's a good point. But usually when I vote for a board there is just a form that comes which offers up the company's recommendation and the shareholders vote yes or no. How about making it more like a normal election? If a person who wants to be on the board can get 0.5% of the shareholders to support/sponsor him, then his name should appear on the proxy ballot with all the others, and the company management's recommendations would have to appear in a separate mailing. That way when two board seats are up for renewal, we could have ten names on the ballot and actually choose. That could result in better accountability.

A company could even offer all board candidates a location with equal space on its website, and track their proposals to see if they actually accomplish what the planned on when running.
