A lot of the molecular and technical advances occur at the Medical school level like Hopkins,Harvard,etc.They in part patent it and sell it to private companies.......e.g.http://medicalcenter.osu.edu/research/profiles/Croce_Chapelle/ medicalcenter.osu.edu Reducing medical research at this level hurts the nonprofit hospitals because they depend a lot on federal NIH grants which are lucrative and scholarly at the same time.
