In the America I grew up in you never read stories like this. Stories like this were from the USSR and other uncivilized, amoral countries.

If you are as old as you claim to be then in the America of your youth you would have been reading stories about blacks getting regularly lynched, blacks getting beaten when they didn't step off the sidewalk as whites approached, about how the US propped up unpopular dictatorships in Korea, Phillipines and Egypt, how the US abandoned the population of Eastern Europe to expoloitation by Stalinist killers, how Cuba was abandoned by America when communists came to power and stole all the assets of the people who lived there. You would have read stories about Japanese US citizens being imprisoned just because of their skin color (I'm sure there was zero torture and rape in the WW2 Japanese internment camps...), about how the US firebombed Japanese cities killing millions of civilians, shall I go on?

Maybe you didn't watch the news or pay attention to things when you were growing up, but good and bad stuff has been happening at the hands of the US forever. If you think things are worse now maybe its just because a light is being shined where it wasn't when you were a kid - shit happened in your youth, you just didn't read about it. And the fact that the light is being shone upon the things in your article is good - what you can see and measure you can improve.

Like I said, Americans are not immigrating en masse to China or Russia (or even Spain), and there is a reason for that.

"Politically, black America is almost socialistic. There's a feeling that the government is the vehicle that's going to lift us to equality, and without the government, we'll never make it. Black America has suffered from this delusion since the 1960s. It's gotten to the point where we've now made affiliation with the Democratic Party an aspect of the black American identity. No matter who the Democratic nominee is, they get 90 percent of the black vote in every single election. ...
"My enemies say my career would have gone nowhere without affirmative action. I don't think that's true, but because there is affirmative action, they can say that. There are no blacks who are free from that stigma, and that's a terrible thing to do to people who are trying to succeed on their own. I think affirmative action is the worst cruelty blacks have endured since slavery."
-- Shelby Steele, interviewed by Michael Robinson in the April issue of the American
