House Panel To Block Processed Poultry Import From China-2

.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn, said she authored the amendment out of concern that China, which has suffered outbreaks of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu, may not properly process the chicken.

"Despite warnings from FSIS's own inspectors of the safety of Chinese plants, and the possibility that we could bring a pandemic into our borders, this rule was fast-tracked and imports will soon be coming into our country," DeLauro said. "We need to stop this rule..."

The House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee approved DeLauro's amendment with a unanimous vote, sending it up with the $94-billion FY 2007 spending bill for full committee consideration.

The raw poultry that China processes and ships to the U.S. would have to originate from either the U.S. or Canada, but U.S. lawmakers have expressed doubts that the Chinese will be able to keep domestic and foreign poultry separate in processing plants.

USDA has said that under its rule - set to be implemented later this month - Chinese plants can't process domestic poultry at the same time they are processing poultry for export to the U.S. for fear of the two mingling.
