If their economy falls apart ahmadinejad blames the US and the students get nationalist on us and move more in lockstep with him. Which is why I believe it's so important to get the UNSC involved so that it can't be contended that it's just US orchestrated, but one in which the world is unified (or at least the largest part of it). Thus, get the US, Europe, and maybe Japan, to implement sanctions, it may not matter if China or Russia actually veto a UNSC resolution. And a veto by them will certainly place them in a politically awkward position of having to defend policies that shelter this megalo-maniac madman they have in Iran. And Iranian businessmen have tremendous ties with Europe, so just very threat of European sanctions might go far to undermining Ahmadinejad's power. What is needed is economic deteorization based on what Ahmadninejad does. Well, I think this is exactly why sanctions are a response to the actions and rhetoric of Ahmadinejad. Sanctions are effectively coercive boycotts. If you buy/sell something to a sanctioned nation, you run the risk of losing your right to buy/sell something to those who implemented the sanctions. But more than that Mike.. Having the UNSC (or the major global economies) institute sanctions on Iran will set us upon another path that will send signals that military action is not necessarily something to immediately worry about. Right now the markets are worried that the US or Israel might be on the verge of military action, which I think both of us would agree is highly unlikely at this juncture. And Ahmadinejad will have to answer for why those "western infidel nations" apparently defied his calculations that sanctions would never be imposed. He's been saying this for the past several weeks for a reason.. And that reason is that he's trying to quell fears within Iran that the path he is leading them down is one of economic ruin. Not following through with sanctions, and continuing to stand by international principles of civilized behavior amongst nation/states TRULY THREATENS to increase him power as he says "I told you they wouldn't impose sanctions". This is what I fear EVEN MORE.. Hawk
