I disagree. I firmly believe that Russia's been the US's closet ally all along... For that matter, isn't crude oil at $70/barrel the best Russian bailout Wall Street could ever hatch?

As I once put it, the US firefighter is basically on a rescue mission in Central Asia: the Russian military collapsed before the demographic/ideological thrust of Central Asia's Muslim peoples --especially with oil at $25/barrel (in the 1990s). Only US intervention in Afghanistan --and beyond, in Uzbekistan, Kyrgystan, Turkmenistan,...-- could check the growing influence of both Pakistan and Iran in the area. Somehow, the Russia/Central Asia crisis mirrors the EU/Yugoslavia one: in both cases the US had to fill the void and make up for the impotence of Russia and the EU.
