When i was a kid in 1965 and was travelling in europe via eurail pass, i actually had a moment of clarity among all the smoke (g) about how the US relied on trucks and europe relied on rails. As a parent of young kids awhile back, i noted how dangerous the roads were becoming as the quality of teamsters deteriorated along with deregulation of truck size and sleep requirements for truckers. Another moment of clarity i guess. Now the rails are going at 110% but the infrastructure just aint there for it to be any more than an add on to trucking. And folks who complained about subsidized amtrak will now be complaining about $3 gas and expensive air travel.
