I wouldn't worry much about the EU falling apart. The dissatisfaction has very little if anything to do with the historic conflicts between France and Germany. This is the key sentence describing the mood:

"In particular, tension was visible in Western Europe about competition not only from China and India, but from the 10 new, mostly former Communist countries of Eastern Europe, that joined the E.U. in 2004."

Is the U.S. falling apart or getting into civil war because of immigrant protests?
