To: PartyTime who wrote (60073 ) 5/5/2006 1:21:24 PM From: one_less Respond to of 93284 I am trying to keep this vein of discussion as simple as possible. The simple truth about the term ‘lie’ is that it can be defined as an ‘action or utterance that is intended to deceive.’ We can make it more complicated if the circumstances call for it. For example if someone on stage is performing magic acts is that person a liar? Of course not because the audience of reasonably affluent individuals understands a priori that the tricks are illusions. Such tricks would only rise to the level of a ‘lie’ if the performer was attempting to convince an audience of less affluency that he has super natural powers and is threatening to use those powers against the audience unless they comply with his demands (extortion). In fact people can be very clever in how they accomplish a dishonest task so it is not always easy to conclude that a falsehood has been committed. There is a great deal of bantering that goes forth and back and forth again on these political threads. Mixed into this may be all kinds of leg pulling, chain yanking, and needling. This hardly rises to the level of dishonesty that qualifies as a lie, since the participants are affluent enough to separate the confrontational flaming from the content of debate. Name calling falls under this umbrella. Jokes whether in poor taste or not, do not usually rise to the level of dishonesty that qualifies as a lie. So, we are left with very little that does qualify. Deliberate misrepresentation of substantive facts in content discussion is of course lying. Knowingly promoting false allegations about an individual is without question lying. It annoys me that the people on these threads seem to be ready to excuse this type of behavior or actually condone and collude in such conduct when it benefits some partisan interest. ”He has lied on SI. He's lied directly toward me by calling me names that I am not, by denying something exists when it does exist, etc.” Not every false statement is a lie. You might conclude you are out of gas when your car engine suddenly dies. Later you may find that it was a clogged fuel filter causing the problem. Is a mistaken conclusion a lie? No. You believed your first statement and had no intent to deceive anyone. Some one might make the assumption that you are a Democrat when you complain about Republicans, when in reality you could have any number of affiliations other than Democrat. That is not a lie, it is a mistaken conclusion based on surface evidence. A false personal statement can be corrected by contributing substantive information that contradicts it. People can believe you or not. You have provided another allegation regarding the honor of jlallen. I have read many of his posts over several years and am bound to contradict your characterization. I would agree that he seems to be a committed right winger and seems to enjoy provoking left wingers with confrontational and often below the belt banter. No doubt you are annoyed by that but it does not rise to the level of dishonor you and others are reporting. You will have to give me a specific example to deal with, if you wish to proceed further with this.
