The National Post reports in its Friday, May 5, edition that Barrick Gold profits tripled in the third quarter thanks to soaring gold prices. The Post's Drew Hasselback writes the company earned $224-million (U.S.), or 29 U.S. cents a share, in its third quarter. This compares with $66-million (U.S.), or 12 U.S. cents a share, a year earlier. A Thomson Financial survey of analysts shows the mean expectation for the third quarter of 2006 was 23 U.S. cents a share. Barrick saw a 71-per-cent increase in production after the start-up of three new mines over the past year. The company expects to crank out 8.6 million ounces of gold in 2006. About 25 per cent of this output will come from South America, including the Lagunas Norte project in Peru and the new Valedero mine in Chile. Barrick will have an even bigger mine, Pascua-Lama, in production in Argentina by 2009. Company officials are not showing any fear over South American leaders. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Bolivian President Evo Morales are making noises about nationalizing resources. Barrick chairman Peter Munk said, "I'd much rather invest in a country that has not been overexposed to foreign investment yet and is keen to get it."
