Peru aims to be No. 4 gold miner in 'short term'

Thursday May 4, 6:56 AM

LIMA, Peru, May 3 (Reuters) - Peru could soon edge out China to become the world's No. 4 gold producing nation as new deposits become mines, the government said on Wednesday.
Peru's gold production rose to a record of about 208 tonnes in 2005, making it the world's No. 5 producer, due to new operations such as the Alto Chicama mine in the northern Andes, controlled by Canada's Barrick Gold Corp. .

The top three gold producers worldwide are South Africa, the United States and Australia.
