I would have to see a chart of the time period this happened. A double is explainable by inflation if it happened over 10 years and certainly wouldnt be a problem. With gas, you also need to add fuel efficiency upgrades on newer models. I think you can make the case that $2 gas was reallly $1.50 if increased fuel efficiency is added in to the equation.
