You may want to reconsider your premise and compare what happened to the Hunts' hoard against what happened to Palladium in 2001...

I don't recall hearing or seeing hoards of people lining up to empty out their family Palladium stockpiles... ;)

During the spike to $50 Peruvians of various classes and wealth were busy selling their silver to buy VHS players and other consumer goods they had longed for a long time. I was more surprised that our landlady bought a VHS rather than the obviously superior Betamax which we of course owned. <g>
